2021: Data Protection vs Personal Data Protection. | The Nuances

October 1, 2021 — another certificate from KYOCERA ACADEMY for the collection. This time, successfully completed the course and passed the test on Data Protection.

“Wait,” you might say, “but didn’t you already take Personal Data Protection?” Yes! And this is a perfect opportunity to explain the difference.

Data Protection is a broader concept. It encompasses the protection of ALL types of corporate data:

  • Trade secrets and know-how

  • Financial records

  • Internal correspondence and documents

  • Intellectual property

  • And, of course, the personal data of employees and clients (which is a part of the whole)

If Personal Data Protection is about an individual’s privacy and rights, then Data Protection is about the security and viability of the entire company. It’s about countering industrial espionage, leaks, and cyberattacks.

For a leader, these are two essential layers of security. The first — to avoid breaking the law and breaching people’s trust. The second — to avoid losing competitive advantages and the business’s reputation.

By taking these courses systematically, I, as a marketer and a manager, have obtained a holistic risk map. Now, when launching any project, from an ad campaign to implementing a new CRM, I immediately assess both aspects: what and how we collect, how we store and protect it — both from a legal standpoint and from a business security standpoint.

Knowledge that protects not only data but also the company’s future. This is the basic hygiene without which you can’t operate in the market today.
